Facts about the Papiamento Language

The Papiamento language is a mixture of Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, English and French. It also includes elements of various African languages.

It is spoken by more than 300,000 people on the islands of the Aruba , CuraƧao, and Bonaire which are referred to as the Netherlands Antilles.

Along with Dutch, Papiamento is an official language of the aforementioned islands. While the language is primarily a spoken language, it does appear in written form in certain newspapers.

Part of this may lie in the fact that no standardized written form of Papiamento exists and there are differences in the way the language is written as well as spoken on the different islands. Papiamento is a tonal language with a low-high and a high-low tones.

Our Squidoo page features a variety of recommended resources for learning Papiamento, videos, rss feeds, and more.
