Learning theTagalog Language

The Tagalog language is an Austronesian language. It is spoken in the Philippines with more than fifty million speakers. Speakers of Tagalog are primarily found in Manila, in the central and southern parts of Luzon, and also Lubang, Marinduque, and areas of Mindoro.

Because of emigration, Tagalog speakers are now found worldwide increasing numbers. Large concentrations of Tagalog speakers are found in Canada, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, UK and USA.

Tagalog was once written with what is referred to as the Baybayin alphabet. This is thought to have developed from the Kawi script of Java, Bali and Sumatra.

The Baybayin alphabet is used primarily today for decorative purposes only. The Latin alphabet is now used to write to Tagalog on a daily basis.
