Learning the Finnish Language

The Finnish language is a member of the Finno-Ugric sub-group of the Ural-Altaic family of languages. The Finno-Ugric languages were first spoken in the Ural Mountains. Finnish is closely related to the Estonian and Saami languages.

While Finnish is not as widely spoken as other languages, there are plenty of Finnish language learning resources. Be sure to check them out and start learning Finnish.

There are approximately over 5 million people throughout the world who speak Finnish. Of these 4.6 million people live in Finland as speak it as their first language. A further 300,000 speakers live in Sweden, 50,000 live in north western Russia, 12,000 in Norway, 5,000 in Estonia, 200,000 live in the USA and 36,000 live in Canada.

The Finnish vocabulary has been influenced by words from the Germanic, Slavic, and Baltic languages. There are several dialects.
