Learning the Kirghiz Language

Kyrgyz or Kirghiz is known by a variety of names. It is also known as Kyrghiz, and Qyrghiz. Kirghiz is a Turkic language. Along with the Russian language, it is an official language of Kyrgyzstan.

Kirghiz it is most closely related to the Altay language and more distantly so to Kazakh. Recent convergence has resulted in a degree of mutual intelligibility between Kyrgyz and Kazakh.

Kyrgyz is spoken by about 4 million people in Kyrgyzstan as well as in China, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Pakistan and Russia.
